Hello! I am a Pilates instructor and performer based in NYC. I have been helping people find their 'powerhouse' for 14 years. Their what? Their POWERHOUSE! This is what Joe Pilates called the core muscles that help stand us up and provide support for everything we do. Pilates developed a system of exercises to center the body and the mind, stimulate breath and circulation, build strength and mobility, and ultimately create a coordinated, balanced mind/body. The goal here is to be energized, pain free and at home in your body everyday. Following in his footsteps and bringing in my study of Alexander Technique, Klein Technique, and biomechanics, I strive to help clients balance points of weakness or overuse to find optimal alignment and create more efficiency and ease of movement.

I completed my teaching certification through Romanaʼs Pilates at The Pilates Studio Den Haag in The Netherlands and True Pilates New York under the tutelage of Marjorie Oron, Cynthia Shipley, and Sari Mejia-Santo. I currently teach independently out of a fully equipped studio in midtown Manhattan and am also available for in home sessions in Manhattan and Brooklyn. And thanks to Zoom, virtual sessions are now possible too!

Private Studio Sessions

Sessions are 55 minutes and customized to your needs. Pilates will help you live your life more fully. That is because Pilates treats the bodymind as a single organically integrated whole. In each session, we train with precision to meet your needs physically and mentally. For some, even spiritually. That is, your needs throughout your life. Working together, we build a program specifically for you using the classical Pilates system supplemented by bio-mechanics and movement fundamentals.

Pilates is meant to be practiced regularly, at least once a week for maintenance and two to three times a week for growth. In the studio, we are helped by unique equipment developed by Joseph Pilates, equipment proven to be effective. As you gain a deeper understanding of Pilates and your body, the practice will become a part of your daily life. And it will be "deep fun," that is, a delight. Working one-on-one will build a lasting foundation. Working on the equipment will align your body and provide targeted resistance creating both tone and suppleness. As your muscles grow stronger, your mental focus will also be sharpened. At some point, you may decide to move to group classes or combine private and group work. Or you may find the one-on-one training and attention to be just what you need.

"Patience and persistence are vital qualities

in the ultimate successful accomplishment of any worthwhile endeavor."

"A few well designed movements,

properly performed in a balanced sequence,

are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion."

-- Joseph Pilates

Virtual Sessions

Cut out your Pilates commute time and work out from home! My experience working virtually with many people -- all ages and levels -- shows that virtual sessions can be *almost* as effective as in person training. Working via Zoom, I can customize a program that works for you, that continues the personal connection you get from working one-on-one.

For a successful virtual session, we need:

  • A strong internet connection.

  • Your computer or tablet set where your full body can be seen and where you can also see me on the screen.

  • A mat or a towel folded to just like a mat.

  • And if possible, a yoga block or thick book (think old encyclopedia or phone book), a theraband, hand weights or 15 oz cans, a foam roller or blanket that can be rolled, a racquet or tennis ball, a Pilates ball or a magic circle. All these props can transform your floor into a Pilates studio.

Pilates is for everyone.

Here are real people who have studied with Jamie:

Jamie is among the very best instructors in the field today. Her in-depth training in classical Pilates, her knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology, and experience as a dancer and theatre performer makes her a uniquely well-informed and educated instructor. In the time I have been studying with Jamie, I have gone from a rank beginner to advanced intermediate in precision of execution, muscle tone and flexibility, stamina, and skeletal alignment. Jamie’s precise instructions, attention to detail, and patience have made all the difference between just doing movement and acquiring skill. Her upbeat and positive manner, sense of humor, and kindness also make her very special. I strongly recommend her Jamie for everyone from sedentary beginners to athletic professional practitioners.

Building to a Roll Up

Help! I can't Roll Up! Don't worry, I'm here to help.

Check out this community class on how to build to a Roll Up in the classical mat work. This 55 minute class is a progression of exercises to help open your back and hips, connect to your abdominals, and learn to work with your own asymmetries.

Often a stiff lower back is caused by habitual tightness in the psoas pulling the lumbar spine into an exaggerated curve and/or rotational patterns in the spine and trunk. In a Roll Up, the spine needs to bend and articulate at each joint to allow the abdominals to then do their job of sitting you up or controlling your journey back down to the mat. And the hamstrings need to both anchor your lower body and allow you to stretch forward over your legs. If there’s habitual tightness at any of these points, it can help to find mobility in these “sticky” spots before attempting the full bodied Roll Up. In this class we will work to approximate our own asymmetries closer to a balanced center line and to gently lengthen the curves of the spine in order to create space in our trunk. We will connect into the abdominal muscles to then support this length and find the coordination and flow of a classical Roll Up.

Why do we need to Roll Up? It prepares us for functional everyday movements like bending down to tie your shoe or picking something off the ground, or getting up off the ground from lying to standing.

With that said, the Roll Up is not for everyone - some injuries simply do not allow the spine to bend in a way that makes an unassisted Roll Up possible. This class is not geared for back injuries, but for habitually tight lower backs. If you're working with a back injury, it's best to start one-on-one with an instructor to create a foundation for your Pilates practice.

This class was developed as a final project for the Advanced Certificate program at Elevate Education.
